Proper diet and nutrition can bolster your bird's immune system, increase his level of energy, contribute to a healthy coat of feathers, and counter act the effects of stress on your bird.
Proper diet and nutrition can reduce or eliminate problems that may be dietary or physical but are mistaken for stress-related problems. For example, loss of feathers can be a stress-related problem, but it can also be a dietary problem.
Sometimes just adding foods rich in vitamins like K, C and B to your bird’s diet will reduce feather loss. Foods like Kale (rich in Vitamin C), and a small amount of cheese (rich in K and allows absorption because of the fat in the cheese) will also keep your bird healthy.
Birds love seeds and nuts, which are only seasonally available in the wild. Sometimes they love these foods to the exclusion of eating a more varied and healthful diet. It’s important to supplement your bird’s diet with fresh fruit and vegetables.
Although birds love to eat fruits and vegetables, they may be frightened by unfamiliar brightly-colored foods because they see everything in vivid color. The color red is especially frightening to birds so introduce red and other brightly-colored fruits and vegetables in small pieces.
If you are concerned about your bird’s diet and nutrition, check with your vet about supplements.
