Birds are the least trouble in the car but, like all pets, they do present certain problems while traveling. It is best to put your bird in smaller cage while driving. This way he is less likely to get hurt or bumped in the event of a sudden stop. Birds can hear higher frequencies than people and seem to be bothered by the whine of the tires on the road. This may make a talkative bird even more vocal. Covering your bird’s cage can help with this problem.
Whenever you travel with birds, there is always the danger of them getting out of the cage and flying away. To prevent this, check with your vet about clipping just one wing. With a clipped wing your
bird can’t fly away but also can’t hurt himself if he falls accidentally. For example, if he fell off a second floor balcony with one wing clipped, he would gracefully spiral to the ground but wouldn’t get hurt but he wouldn’t be able to fly away, either.
Always travel with paper towels for quick clean ups, and the usual food water and trays in the cage and lots of familiar toys. Remember to book your overnight accommodations in advance, and let the reservations agent know you will be bringing your bird. Some “pet–friendly” hotels in fact only allow dogs so be sure to check this in advance.
