Home - Birds

Your home can be stressful for birds because they are very sensitive creatures. Situations that will stress your bird at home are lack of attention and lack of stimulation, new toys, having a cage that is not big enough, and having pet cats in the same room.

You can bring your bird into the living room or kitchen with you when you are home to provide companionship and lower your bird’s stress. Your bird will like hearing normal conversation, especially if you are talking to him.

Birds need mental stimulation to avoid feeling stressed, but unfortunately, they are often stressed and terrified by the new toys we give them for this purpose. Introduce a new toy to a bird gradually. First, put the toy in view of the cage, but across the room. Leave it there for a few days. Then move it to a table or chair that’s closer to the cage and leave it there for a few days, also. The next step it to hang it outside the cage. After the bird has grown accustomed to it, he will be ready to have the toy inside the cage. You can exchange the toys in the cage with older toys your bird recognizes. You can keep several dozen toys that you keep moving in and out of the cage every few weeks.

Birds need space to flap their wings and most cages don’t provide enough room. Consider buying a larger cage for your bird or letting him out of his cage every day for exercise, especially if you are experiencing behavior problems in your bird. You can learn more about this on pages of this website for Exercise Birds. And when you go out, be sure to keep the bird in a room where it is safe from any pet cats.
