Smart Toys for a Smart Puppy

Basil, the six month old Australian Shepherd, has some smart new toys and a new collar, purchased by his owner, Nicole Curcio, with the $50 gift card won from the November Picture Perfect Pet Photo Contest.

Australian Shepherds are herding dogs, so Nicole kept that in mind when making her toy choices.  She wrote us “So I got Basil a new collar and a soccer ball plus some other crazy ball for ‘herding breeds’. The big red ball actually has another ball inside that makes the thing roll on it’s own. It’s supposed to be good for herders because it makes them want to “herd” the thing in the direction of their choosing.

“Of course Basil just likes to pick it up and drag it around, or drop it on the floor to make the most noise possible! Last night I cleaned up all of his toys, putting them in his toy box, and he promptly grabbed the red ball out of the box and dragged it in his ‘room’ (crate) and curled up beside it.”

Sometimes a simple round ball is the most fun, as Nicole told us: “Truth be told, the soccer ball is the best toy I’ve gotten him. We go out to the field and I dribble it around and he steals it from me, or chases it down the field with his nose until he can get a good grip with his teeth. He loves to chase things on the ground- presumably that herding instinct.”

All of this talk about Australian Shepherds sparked my interest in the breed.  A little reading up revealed that despite its name, the breed is not originally from Australia.  It is, in fact, a North American Breed.  The name is believed to come from Basque sheepherders who came from Australia.  The article also stated, and Nicole would probably agree, that the Aussie “has considerable energy and drive, and usually needs a job to do.”

We hope that Basil and Nicole continue to enjoy these new purchases.  Remember to enter your dog, cat, or bird in the contest and get your friends to vote so that you, too, can win a $50 gift card!

We Love Iguanas, Really.

When we started PetStress.com we had to make some tough choices about which types of pets to include in the site. There are so many different ones out there. We wondered, “should we include reptiles?” “What about ferrets, guinea pigs, and bunnies?” We would have loved to provide information to all types of pet owners, but we decided to stick with the pets we know best. That’s how we arrived at dogs, cats and birds.

Since starting our photo contest, we have received some entries that did not qualify because they were not dog, cat or bird images. However, they are still great pictures. Here’s a sampling in addition to the one above:

Its nice to see that these pets seem to be living in nice, clean conditions, and also are enjoying some play time like this image below with the pink ball.

Although none of these images could win, all were winners for us!

November Photo Contest Winner!

Congratulations to Basil and his owner Nicole Curcio, winners of the November PetStress.com Picture Perfect Pet Photo Contest!

Here’s the winning photo of Basil:Basil: November 2009 Petstress.com Photo Contest winner

We caught up with Nicole who gave us the scoop on her 5.5 month old Australian Shepherd.

“I lost my 13 year old dog to cancer on a Monday and was so lost without canine companionship I began searching the online databases of the local shelters, rescue groups and humane societies. I actually drove an hour down to the Salem, OR humane society to look at a different dog and fell in love with Basil instead. He was already on hold, so I put a back-up hold on him and got the call on Saturday morning to come pick him up!”

“This photo was taken in the first day or so we had him. The toy was his favorite, he took it everywhere, until he finally destroyed it.”

She also reports that Basil is quickly outgrowing his collar, so the $50 gift certificate will go towards a new collar and some problem-solving toys for her super smart puppy.
